The Centre for Security Studies in cooperation with The Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, The International Security Sector Advisory Team of the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces and PSOTC has organized three day course from 4th to 6th of July 2012 on Security Sector Reform in Peace Support Operations (PSO – SSR). The Course was attended by AFBiH, Ministry of Security (BiH), Ministry of Defence (MKD), EUFOR and CSS students.
The aim of the PSO –SSR was to build both SSR knowledge and skills within the framework of the Peace Support Operations. Through an interactive and practical training approach, this course helped participants to:- Better understand the concept of evaluation of SSR, including actors, concept and principles;
– Understand the political nature of SSR and the challenges faced when ‘supporting’ SSR processes in post-conflict contexts;
– Understand synergies and complementariness between peace support operations and SSR;
– Identify the common challenges and opportunities for both PSO and SSR;
– Use concrete cases to build on lessons learned and apply concepts to practice;
The course will assist PSOTC to develop the capacity of PSOTC to enable integration of SSR into PSOTC training curricula and additionally set PSOTC on the path to the delivery of SSR courses for BiH and regional students.
This seminar is part of CSS project named „Support to institutional building of PSOTC in increasing their capacities for smooth transition to local ownership” financed from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway.
